Good Dirt, New York City
An app that makes composting convenient for New Yorkers
USER EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE DESIGN
MFA DESIGN FOR SOCIAL INNOVATION
Most NewYorkers are willing to compost and believe that they can contribute to the earth’s good by composting. However, they find the process of composting difficult as some must go out of their way to drop off the compost and eventually feel less motivated.
Some pain points in the composter's journey–
Saving the compost in the freezer: Occupies a lot of space in the freezer
Time: People don't have the time to drop off the compost at the nearby compost location
What is open today: Even if people did have the time, their schedules doesn't align with what's open on the day that they want to drop off compost
The smell: While commuting, the smell of the compost has been an issue.
How might we make composting convenient, simple, easy and interesting for New Yorkers to compost regularly?
Good Dirt– an app that makes composting convenient, interesting and fun. A service through a peer to peer network that allows one person to voluntarily drop off compost at a nearby farmers market. Neighbors unable to take their compost to the market one week can coordinate with someone nearby to have their compost picked up.
THE TASK FLOW
The users initial feedback is that they wanted less functions and easy usability. They also wanted information on what to compost. Based on the feedback we made the final designs.
In order to schedule pick up the users must fill in basic information like the date, time and the number of bags that they have to compost.
Through this app the users find matches (the neighbourhood volunteers) who are composting in your neighbourhood.
You can confirm your next compost pick up with the neighbourhood volunteer, so that they can drop it off at the nearby farmers market.
Settings allows you to sign up as a volunteer, track real time information of where your compost is headed, track your compost activity– sends you reminders to compost, scheduling pick up and information on what to compost.
